Abstract
BACKGROUND: Head injuries often result in mortality, morbidity, and lasting neurological disability, including hearing impairment. This study aimed to determine the Prevalence of Hearing Loss among head-injured Patients at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional prospective study involving 80 head-injured patients and 80 controls. Pure tone hearing thresholds were measured and analysed using IBM-SPSS version 25.0. RESULTS: The mean age for head-injured patients and controls was 31.93  12.90 years and 32.16  13.05 years, respectively (P = 0.817). Among the head-injured patients, 68 (85.0%) were males and 12 (15.0%) were females. Among the controls, 67 (83.8%) were males, and 13 (16.2%) were females, with M: F 5.6:1. Head-injured patients had worse hearing thresholds than controls, with a prevalence of 35.0% and 60.0% in their better ears and worse ears, respectively, compared to 11.3% and 27.5% in the better ears and worse ears of the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in the hearing status of head-injured patients compared to the controls (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study found a significant difference in hearing status between head-injured patients and controls. The prevalence of hearing loss was higher among head-injured patients. These findings underscore the significance of audiological evaluation in patients with head injuries. KEYWORDS: Pure Tone Audiometry, Head injury, Hearing threshold, Sokoto, Nigeria.
